La Misma Luna

Rosario left her son in Mexico and immigrated to the US with dreams of making a better life for him. She hoped to work hard and make enough money to bring Carlitos to live with her. Carlitos father Oscar was not involved in his life, so the financial burden fell solely on Rosario. She felt that by going to Los Angeles she would have a better chance of giving Carlitos the life he deserved.Rosario worked two jobs to save money to pay for a lawyer and to be able to send money to her mother each month for the care of her son. By leaving Carlitos with her mother Rosario was able to leave knowing that he would be loved and taken care of. Both Rosario and Carlitos were unhappy and lonely, each missing the other. Rosario was consumed with guilt and constantly questioned whether or not she was doing the right thing. Carlitos at different times would become angry that his mother had left him not fully able to understand that she was trying to help him. He questioned if he would ever see her again. I believe that a mother is always looking out for her child and would do anything in her power to make their lives as happy and fulfilling as possible. If it took leaving that child with someone she trusted while she pursued a better life for them then I feel like that is the ultimate sacrifice. With as many opportunities as there are in the US its hard to comprehend the need to seperate from family for any length of time to make a better life but if necessary I believe any mother would do what they have to do.

  1. I completely agree with this account of the film. I really enjoyed the film, I was overwhelmed by Carlito and Rosario's efforts to make a better life for themselves. The way Carlito took care of his grandmother in the beginning was very touching, not many children that age would be so concerned with the care of a grandparent. I felt that Rosario was indeed a wonderful mother. Many young women now leave their children with their grandparents to run off and have fun. Rosario was working many jobs to pave the way for a better life for Carlito. She never once strayed from her committment. She didn't even look at Paco as a companion until she was encouraged by her friend to consider him as a means of facilitating Carlito's move to the US. When they finally see each other from opposite corners of the street, I really feared that one of them would be struck by a car while running to meet each other. I wasn't expecting the film to have such a wonderful ending. I look forward to seeing more films though I would be surprised if they are as wonderful as this one.
